Katla Ice Cave is located inside Mýrdalsjökull, a large glacier which sits on top of the active Katla Volcano. To reach the cave, you need to travel through ancient backroads in a large 4×4 vehicle known as a super jeep. At the start of this tour, you will meet your guide at the little village of Vík, situated a short distance from the famous Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. Here you will board the super jeep and head towards the glacier.
The route is bumpy and quite the adventure in itself but the scenery hauntingly beautiful. Along the way, your friendly guide will tell you about how volcanic eruptions and glacial floods came to shape the area into the bare and barren shape it is in now. They will also tell you about Katla, the evil witch who inspired the name of the volcano and the ice cave.
At the foot of the glacier, you will receive all gear necessary for this trip, including crampons and a helmet with a torch. You can then step inside the 800-year-old ice cave to see its glittering white and blue walls which are streaked with black ash from past volcanic eruptions.
After taking your time admiring the ice and taking enough photos for your social media accounts, you will go back to the super jeep. Before returning to Vík, your guide will go off-road to a private beach and drive on the smooth black sand, giving you a fantastic view of the ocean and surrounding nature.

- The difficulty level is set to ‘moderate’ which means that all those in good health should be able to participate. Those who exercise regularly, are able to walk for 2-6 hours every day, and are used to all-terrain walks should be just fine.
