Overview

Explore a glittering ice cave located in a glacier which sits on top of a volcano. The Katla Ice Cave Tour from Vík provides both winter and summer visitors to South Iceland the chance to step inside a beautiful frosty wonderland and see the otherworldly ice formations found within.

Vík is a charming village on Iceland’s South Coast. It is a popular stop for those visiting the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, which is found closeby. It is here, by a local restaurant in town, where you will meet your guide. After introductions, you will board a super jeep, a large vehicle built to handle Iceland’s rough terrain, and head towards Mýrdalsjökull Glacier.

The massive ice cap of Mýrdalsjökull is Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier. It covers mountains, valleys, and even an active volcano called Katla. On your way to the ice cave, your guide will tell you about the history and folklore of this fascinating region. You’ll undoubtedly hear about the 2010 eruption in the nearby Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, the witch who gave her name to the Katla Volcano, and how scientists carefully monitor all volcanoes in the area.

Once at the glacier, your guide will give you all equipment needed for an ice caving expedition, and help you put it on if needed. These include crampons, helmet, and a headlamp. Your guide will then lead you to the ice cave and show you how to enter this frosty chamber.

Inside you’ll see spectacular combinations of colours; most notably bright blue ice mixed with jet-black ash from past volcanic eruptions. This mixture of colours reminds many of ‘Dragon Glass’, one of the two known substances capable of killing White Walkers in the Game of Thrones series. For that reason, the ice cave has earned the nickname “Dragon Glass Ice Cave”.

Once you’ve explored the beautiful ice cave, taken lots of photos, and made sure there are no White Walkers around, you’ll return to the super jeep. Back in Vík, you’ll bid farewell to your guide, and then you are free to continue with your adventure on the South Coast of Iceland.

Spice up your holiday in South Iceland with an unforgettable trip to the Katla Ice Cave. Book now to secure your spot on this popular tour.
