Easy to Moderate
Discover incredible sceneries of jet black sands, glittering ice, volcanoes, and Iceland’s highest peaks on a glacier hiking tour in Skaftafell Nature Reserve. Those travelling near the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier should not let this opportunity pass them by.
Vatnajökull is Europe’s largest glacier, and it is located in the south-east corner of the country. This massive ice cap has shaped the surrounding landscape, most notably the beautiful Skaftafell Nature Reserve; an area filled with green vegetation, black sand deserts, and bright white glaciers. The best way to take in the immense beauty of this area is from above, on a glacier hike.
You will meet your glacier guides by the Skaftafell Terminal Tour Centre. After quick introductions, you will be given all the glacier gear you need to scale the ice. Then you will board a bus which will take you to the glacier’s parking lot. From there, it is a short hike to the foot of the glacier where your guide will show you how to put on the crampons and use the rest of the glacier equipment.
No experience is needed for this tour, and your guide will be with you every step of the way. This is also a small-group tour, meaning that your guide will be able to give you all the attention you need, as well as answer any questions you might have.
Your guide will also tell you all about your surroundings; about the Skaftafell Nature Reserve as well as the glacier on which you are standing. Vatnajökull is home to Iceland’s highest point, Hvannadalshnúkur, a pyramidal-shaped peak located on the rim of Öræfajökull volcano.
You will stay on the ice for around 60-90 minutes, taking in the magnificent view, looking into electric blue crevasses and seemingly bottomless glacier moulins. After which, you will return to the Skaftafell Terminal where you will bid farewell to your guide. You are then free to explore Skaftafell further or continue to your next adventure, perhaps visiting the nearby Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.
