Your plane will touch ground at Keflavík International Airport, located in the middle of a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula. After collecting your bags, you will board a bus located just outside the arrivals hall, and head to Reykjavík city.
If your flight arrives early in the day, you can add a trip to the luxurious Blue Lagoon during the booking process. The spa is located midway between the airport and the city and serves as a great introduction to Iceland. You’ll bathe in warm, geothermal water, surrounded by dark lava fields and white pillars of steam. You’ll receive a complimentary silica mud mask and a drink of your choice.
Once in Reykjavík, check into your accommodation and unwind. You’ll be returning to this hotel after your trip to the Golden Circle tomorrow, so you can unpack and get settled in. You will then have the rest of the day to explore the city. Nearby, you’ll find shops, restaurants, museums, and bars.
- Reykjanes Peninsula – a vast, lunar-like lava field
- Reykjavík – Iceland’s lively capital
- Unwinding at the Blue Lagoon Spa
You’ll depart Reykjavík in the morning and head to the Golden Circle where you’ll spend the day exploring this fascinating region.
During the booking process, you add an adventure to spice up this day. One of your options is riding the Icelandic horse through the countryside. Icelandic horses are small and intelligent creatures, making this tour an ideal choice for the entire family.
The second option is snorkelling between continents. Silfra is a fissure located in Þingvellir National Park, on the boundaries of the Eurasian and the N-American tectonic plates. It is filled with meltwater from a nearby glacier, providing exceptional visibility for snorkelling.
The third choice is perfect for those looking for a little adrenaline rush. You can opt for a snowmobile tour where you’ll race across a glacier. From the parking lot of Gullfoss waterfall, you’ll be transported up Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier, where you can whizz across the ancient ice.
After an eventful day of exploring Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area and Gullfoss Waterfall, you’ll return to your accommodation in Reykjavík.
- Þingvellir National Park – Historical place, located between two continents.
- Geysir Geothermal Area – Home of bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and erupting geysers.
- Strokkur Geyser – Goes off every 5-10 minutes, reaching heights of around 15-20 metres.
- Gullfoss Waterfall – A stunning cascades which falls 32 metres into an ancient canyon.
- Snorkelling in Silfra Fissure
- Snowmobiling on Langjökull Glacier
- Horse riding through the countryside
Now it is time to make your way down South, where you’ll see free-roaming sheep and Icelandic horses grazing as you are driven through the rolling farmlands.
You’ll stop at two impressive waterfalls. The former, Seljalandsfoss, falls over a shallow cave in which you can walk to get a unique view from behind the cascade. The second one, Skógafoss, is equally as beautiful but more powerful.
You will then head to Skaftafell, a beautiful region nestled under the mighty Vatnajökull glacier. Here, you’ll embark on a glacier hike on one of Vatnajökull’s outlet glaciers. The view on top of the surrounding countryside and tall mountains paired with the stillness of the wilderness of the ice cap is simply breathtaking.
You’ll then head to your accommodation in the area where you will spend the night.
- Seljalandsfoss Waterfall – A unique waterfall where you can walk behind the cascading water.
- Skógafoss Waterfall – A wide, powerful, and stunning cascade.
- Skaftafell Nature Reserve – a stunning area where green flora meets black sands and white glaciers.
- Glacier Hike on one of Vatnajökull Glacier’s tongues.
You will start the day by visiting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoons and watch as enormous icebergs float gently on a serene lake before they make their way to the ocean. In between the massive bergs swim curious and adorable seals, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready.
You can opt to get a closer look at the bergs — and the seals which swim around them — with a boat tour. Amphibian boats sail slowly on the lagoon, making this the perfect excursion for families and photographers looking to get a great shot of the icebergs.
Then it is time to head back to Reykjavík city. En route is the beautiful Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. Here, you’ll see grey cliffs made of geometric basalt columns to your East, the natural rock arch, Dyrhólaey, to your West, and out South, nothing but the endless ocean. You might even spot a puffin or two if you are lucky.
You’ll arrive in the city before dinner time, giving you enough time to explore downtown Reykjavík while the midnight sun lights up the night.
- Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon – Where enormous icebergs float on a bright blue lake.
- Diamond Beach – Where icebergs from the lagoon wash up on shore and glisten on black sand.
- Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach – The famous lava beach.
- Amphibian Boat Tour on Jökulsárlón
Now it is time to bid farewell to Iceland. If you have a late flight, you can do some exploring in the city first. Reykjavík is a colourful and vibrant city, and we recommend you follow the sounds and lights to see if you find something to your liking. If you are unsure of what to do, you can always contact your personal travel agent for recommendations.
If you didn’t have time on your arrival day, you can visit the Blue Lagoon on your way to the airport. It is a great way to unwind after your adventures in Iceland, and you are sure to arrive relaxed and rested at Keflavík International Airport.
We hope you had a fantastic time in Iceland and come back soon!
