No Age Limit
See North Iceland’s wonderful wildlife in its natural habitat on a Whale Watching Tour from Akureyri. Head out onto Eyjafjörður fjord in North Iceland in search of the wealth of marine creatures found there, mainly the incredible humpback whale.
You’ll meet your captain at the Akureyri marina, where you will board the whale watching boat. After putting on warm coveralls — it can be pretty chilly out on the North Atlantic Ocean — you’ll set sails out onto Eyjafjörður fjord.
Onboard are specially trained whale watching guides and naturalists who are experts at spotting signs of whales in the ocean. They will also be on hand to tell you about the region, about the whales found here, and answer any questions you may have.
You are also welcome to help them find the whales. One of the signs that indicate that a whale is close by is a cluster of seabirds on the water. Where there are birds, there is food, and where there is food, there are whales.
The waters of Eyjafjörður attract whales of all kinds, but the most common ones spotted on tours here are humpback whales. They are one of the larger species of whales. Adults can range in length 12–16 metres (39–52 feet) and weigh around 25–30 tonnes.
The ship on which you’ll be travelling is a high-speed, specially modified wildlife viewing ship. It has multi-level viewing platforms and plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. It also comes equipped with a bar and cafeteria. The speed allows the ship to cover more distance in a shorter time, so no area will be unexplored on your journey.
Though the main attraction today is the majestic whales, the coastal scenery of Eyjafjörður fjord is quite breathtaking. From the ship, you’ll have fantastic views of the town of Akureyri and the snow-capped mountains which surround it.
If you are travelling in North Iceland, don’t let this fantastic opportunity pass you by. Book now to secure your spot on this amazing adventure.
